MEET THE MAKERS: J.J. MARTIN

J.J. Martin is the joyful powerhouse behind La DoubleJ – a Milan based fashion house that focuses on feel-good style, energy elevation, and the ebullient Italian way of life through heart-based design and community.

An American who has been living in Milan for 21 years, J.J. was a journalist before making the leap into the fashion world, and soon, La DoubleJ took flight in 2017. With original collections of eclectic prints, and plenty of effortless glamour, turning fashion and homeware into a mood-boosting experience. Rooted in maximalism and colour therapy, each piece is designed to spread joy and uplift.

As part of our Meet the Makers series, a portrait collection by Irene Forte Skincare that celebrates the Italian artisans, experts, and creatives we love, we sat down with J.J., whose magnetic energy and devotion to her craft resonates with Irene Forte Skincare.

What’s always in your hands, on you, or close by in your workspace, something you can’t live without?

“A vogel crystal from IXIM is always in my hand,” answers J.J., nodding to her love of energy elevation. “Along with an amethyst crystal portal necklace around my neck.”

A corner of your studio or workspace you love most - Or, where do you feel most inspired  when creating?

“The Gong Temple in our new Milan headquarters,” says J.J, whose brand HQ that is known as the ‘starquarters’ comprises five stories of wonder in the city’s Navigli neighborhood. Guests enter through the joy portal, and gaze upon products that are showcased amongst a 360-degree psychedelic floral mural.

What products are essential in your beauty regime?

“I’m the opposite of a product junkie, as I only use ones that my skin has an energetic alignment with,” answers J.J. “I just received the Hibiscus Night Cream and have been slathering my face, neck, and even my arms in this golden elixir. I’m obsessed with any product that has a high energetic frequency and I’m really attuned to that. This one is pulsating in a really extraordinary way.”

Tell us about a keepsake or heirloom you hold dear – something meaningful you treasure, big or small

“Ornately cut crystal champagne coupes from my parents’ wedding,” confesses J.J.

Your favorite piece of art, décor, or an object in your space. What brings beauty or inspiration to your surroundings?

“The mural on my meditation room ceiling,” says J.J. Which comes as no surprise, given that LA DoubleJ has a collection titled ‘Meditation Station’. Pieces are specifically crafted with elevating your energy in mind, and include items intended to adorn your altar or your meditation space at home.

Can you share your favorite La DoubleJ collection or item – the piece you wear or use on repeat, or one that simply brings you joy?

“My favorite La DoubleJ collection to date is probably our Fall 2023 Collection inspired by the ancient Egyptian Mystery School – I love each piece!” says J.J.

A favorite book or magazine currently on your shelf - Something you return to—or  something new that’s inspired you recently.

“The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby,” answers J.J., speaking of the author’s 1999 bestseller that navigates the mysterious crossroads of mind, myth, and matter, linking consciousness, serpent symbolism, and life’s beginnings.

Where is your favorite place in Italy, whether it’s a city, village, or hidden spot that holds special meaning for you?

Italy's deepest, and perhaps most magical glacial lake, that's known across the world for its beauty and dramatic scenery is the winner for J.J. “Passalacqua on Lake Como,” she says.

Who is a maker, artist, or healer whose work you admire? Someone who inspires your creative or  personal path.

“The Goddess Isis – one of the most important goddesses in the Egyptian pantheon, known as the goddess of motherhood and magic,” answers J.J.

Do you have a daily ritual that you cherish, beyond your work (or perhaps part of it), is there a quiet habit,  gesture, or moment you return to each day?

J.J. chooses an ancient Indian Buddhist meditation technique as her daily ritual – “Vipassana insight meditation,” she says. The practice involves focusing on the breath to calm the mind, and is a way of observing oneself without judgment.
